NIE in Spain

What is an NIE and who needs it?...

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a Spanish tax identification number assigned by the Spanish authorities to any foreigner. It is a legal requirement for all resident and non-resident foreigners with financial, professional or social affairs in Spain - regardless of whether they are EU citizens or from a non-EU country. 

An NIE number is needed to:

•Open a bank account

•Buy, sell or insure property

•Arrange credit terms or a mortgage

•Pay taxes

•Be paid for employment

•Use short-term employment agencies

•To study

•Apply for a business permit and start a business

•Register with social services and arrange receipt of social security benefits

•Apply for a driver's licence

•Arrange any utility account except for pre-paid mobile phones

•Inherit assets                                                                                                                                                                                     

An EU-citizen applying for their Registration Certificate (Certificado De Registro) will be issued an NIE number at the same time, as the two application processes are combined. The NIE (foreigner identification number) is equivalent of the Russian INN.

Applying for an NIE 

The following documents are required: 

Prefilled request for special forms (form EX14).

A valid original passport with a visa and passport copy;

A return tickets along with copy;

A preliminary Original contract for reservation of home to buy and its copy;

Bank certificate proving the existence of a buyer of property related financial assets (around 30% of the cost of housing);


2 photos 3x4;

For the layout of the document is taken small fee at around 10 Euros, you can pay at any bank. The procedure for obtaining NIE held at the police station, documents are ready within a week.

For Russian citizens to obtain the identification number of an alien may file an application at the Consulate General of Spain in Moscow.

At the Consulate accept the documents and send them to Spain. Decorate NIE competent employees of the Spanish Ministry of Interior.
